IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
This is one of the most
puzzling of diagnoses for Gastroenterologists. To understand
why this is puzzling is to trace the origin of this diagnoses.
15 yrs back there was no such diagnoses all symptoms were
evaluated individually and treated.
In 1996 there was a
publication in a journal where the link between Brain and Gut
was proposed. The medical (not surgical)faculty caught on the
diagnoses and pharmaceutical companies followed. The idea that
as single entity was causing all symptoms was attractive and
convenient for the pharmaceutical companies and a cure soon
followed in the form of pop-a-pill therapy. patients responded
initially because the drugs are very powerful and can give
immediate relief, but the fact that no patient was getting
cured was soon swept under the carpet. The emerging field of
Gastroentrology formed by Physicians went overboard in
treating these patients. (Dont believe it Click here and
find more details.)
Consider some facts on this
IBS diagnoses.
1. It does not show up in any Investigation.
2. The irritability part of IBS(mean more activity of bowel
has never been proved) Though
that should be easiest to prove with Ultrasonography.
3. The tension?Depression association has never been proved.
4. No patient has been cured of IBS by any gastroenterologist
world wide (surprised ).
5. Persistent IBS like symptoms may be first and early signs
of a more serious disease like cancer.
6. IBS is a 30 billion $ business in USA alone. (A lot of
money for something that does not work)
Where is this information
coming from >> Standard textbooks of Medicine.
More facts !! Ok Read on
1. Chinese medicine does not recognize IBS.
2. Only a diagnoses and diet modification can cure you of this
problem.
3. Non treatment of these symptoms is responsible for
depression, divorces, suicides.
4. Drugs though giving relief initially will only worsen you
condition.
5. In fact IBS symptoms are presenting features of other
diagnoses.
6. In coming years you will now start finding an association
of IBS with autoimmune disorders.
7.If you have been given this diagnoses ,you need help and
fast.
We have seen all these facts in our practice. The first thing
we do when a patient of IBS comes along is to search for a
diagnoses and treat accordingly. We are able to do this in
nearly all cases (In fact we are still waiting for a true case
of IBS).
Our only problem is in convincing a person that IBS is not a
diagnoses but an excuse for not finding one.
